Records from the Courthouse

The Gasconade County Historical Society Archives & Records Center (ARC) is a one-stop facility for genealogical and general history research about Gasconade County.

Hours for the Center are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday and 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday. The facility is located at 315 Schiller Street at the corner of 4th & Schiller in downtown Hermann, across the street from the German School Museum and Clock Tower, in a 1909 brick building that was originally built for Farmers & Merchants Bank.

Bronze statue of George Bayer, Hermann's Founding Father, located just outside the ARC entrance. Bayer acquired the land on behalf of the German Settlement Society of Philadelphia in 1837 and was the settlement agent for the earliest years. The original deed transfer documents for Hermann reside in our ARC and are available for public viewing at specifically scheduled times. For more detail regarding the life and accomplishments of George F. Bayer click on his image above.

A bright and cheery reading/research room and Society volunteers greet visitors. Experienced volunteers assist researchers as much or as little as they desire. Researchers work in the first-floor reading room and volunteers retrieve records from other levels as requested.

Microfilm reader/printers are available. Volunteers make photo copies as requested. Copies are $1.00 each for non-members and $.50 for Society members. An archives shop area allows the visitor to purchase all of the items which are found in our store.
